Inauguration of the Hong Kong Myopia Taskforce at APAO Congress 2026

February 16, 2026

Professor Serge Resnikoff, Chair of the International Myopia Institute (IMI), attended the inauguration of the Hong Kong Myopia Taskforce on Thursday, 5 February 2026, during the APAO Congress in Hong Kong. He was invited to serve as a Senior Advisor to the Taskforce, reflecting the value placed on international expertise and evidence-based leadership in addressing myopia as a global public health challenge.

The inauguration took place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre as part of the APAO Myopia Luncheon, a high-level event that brought together national and international leaders to discuss myopia prevention and control. The luncheon highlighted the Chinese Myopia Prevention and Control Model and its application to population-level eye health strategies.

The Hong Kong Myopia Taskforce was jointly organised by the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society, the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Association of Private Eye Surgeons, and the Hong Kong Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Society, with support from the wider ophthalmology community, cross-disciplinary academic institutions, and national and global leaders.

The Taskforce was established to advance comprehensive myopia control strategies in Hong Kong, encompassing research, clinical services and public education. Its work will focus on integrating emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, wearable devices and novel treatment approaches, into clinical practice to support cost-effective, scalable and long-term myopia management.

The inauguration underscored the growing recognition of myopia as a public health priority in Hong Kong and across the region, and highlighted the importance of collaboration between local initiatives and international experts in shaping future approaches to myopia prevention and management.

The APAO Congress 2026, held from 5–8 February, welcomed more than 10,000 ophthalmologists and eye care professionals from over 100 countries and regions, providing a global platform for leadership, knowledge exchange and collaboration in ophthalmology.
